Cicoil was founded in Chatsworth, California on March 5, 1956 as a provider of multi-conductor cables to the mainframe computer industry. Cicoil’s engineers had figured out how to use liquid silicone rubber to mold a flat cable containing multiple conductors of the same size. Since the cable looked like a flat ribbon or a tape, Cicoil named it Ribbon Cable, and the Flexible Flat Cable was born.
Almost 50 years after an Apollo Space Walk, a Long-lost Flat Cable Harness returned back home to Cicoil. The “Bio-Harness” Assembly, built by Cicoil for the 1969 Apollo 9 Space Flight, was acquired by Cicoil in a NASA Apollo Space Program Auction. Amazingly, the harness looks virtually brand-new, considering its age and the number of miles it has travelled.
Not all companies can lay claim to the fact that their products directly supported the life of Apollo astronauts, but Santa Clarita-based Cicoil can. And in a chance opportunity, one of the long-lost flat cable harnesses produced by the company came up for auction from a private collection – and came back to the place it was manufactured 50 years later.
